Minna—The drama which has engulfed the Niger State House of Assembly continued yesterday with the impeachment of Isa Kawu, who was elected Speaker of the House a week ago. Kawu was impeached after a vote of no confidence was passed on him with 21 members in support of the motion and three against.
He was replaced with Mr. Adamu Usman, a first-timer and immediate past Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, representing Mokwa Constituency. He was immediately sworn in by the Clerk of the House.
Last Tuesday, Mohammed Gammunu, was impeached for incompetence after a motion moved by Bashir Goma, representing Wushishi Constituency, under matters of urgent public importance was adopted.
At a reconvened session, yesterday, Andrew Doma, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, representing Shiroro Constituency, moved for the impeachment of Kawu, over his alleged inability to move the House forward just a week after his election.
The motion was seconded by Abbas Waziri, PDP, Magama Constituency. However, the motion was quickly countered by Muhammad Umar, representing Kontagora 1 Constituency (CPC) and seconded by Farouk Bala Bida 11 (CPC).
After a hot debate, the motion was put to vote and 21 members out of 25 voted for the impeachment, while 3 voted against.
Immediately after the drama, Comfort Zakari (PDP), representing Tafa Constituency, then moved for the nomination of Adamu Usman as the new Speaker, which was unanimously adopted.
In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker described the recent political scenarios in the House as “democracy in action” and assured his colleagues that he will not let them down as they will be carried along in the running of affairs of the House.
