The Management of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri (AIFUE) has dismissed as false a report circulating online alleging that the institution enrolled only 942 students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The report, published by an online blog claimed that the low enrolment figure could affect the university’s access to funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). 

The University described the claim as “malicious, puerile and fabricated.”

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Nnaemeka Ijioma, the institution said the figures cited in the blog post were nonexistent, insisting that the accurate number of newly admitted students for the session was publicly announced during its matriculation ceremony held on April 4, 2025.

According to the University, a total of 2,428 students were matriculated at the event, comprising 2,383 Bachelor’s degree students and 45 Professional Diploma in Education students. The ceremony, the first since the institution was upgraded to a university, was widely covered by the media and attended by students, parents, staff and dignitaries.

The institution noted that all admissions were processed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions and Processing System (JAMB CAPS), making the data verifiable only through JAMB and the university. It therefore questioned the source of the figures cited by the blog.

AIFUE added that the university currently has a total student population of nearly 10,000 and has already admitted close to 2,000 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the admission window still open until November 17, 2025.

The Management demanded the immediate removal of the “offensive” report and a public apology from the blog, warning that failure to comply may result in legal action. The university urged the public to ignore the report and rely solely on information published on its official website.
