Lawmaker addresses Shettima’s aide as ‘Your Excellency’

By Ndahi Marama
MAIDUGURI—GOVERNOR Kashim Shettima of Borno State, yesterday, upbraided a member of the House of Representatives representing Askira Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency in the state, who addressed his aide as ‘Your Excellency’ and feeling jittery while addressing him, wondering why the legislator could not even pronounce his name correctly.

The drama occurred when the legislator, Mr. Abdu Mshelia, led the House of Representatives Technical Committee on Health on a courtesy visit to Shettima at Government House.

Sources said the first sign that there was trouble emerged when Mshela became incoherent while introducing the Governor and some of his aides to his colleagues, pronouncing the governor’s name correctly.

It was alleged that before the dust created by this error name could settle down, Mshella reportedly referred to the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Abubakar Kyari, as His Excellency.

The governor said: “Honourable Abdu, it is still surprising that you cannot pronounce or mention in full the correct names of your own governor, not to even express yourself in simple sentences.”
