Players and officials of Nigerian club Sunshine Stars and Egypt’s Al-Ahly have been trapped in Mali’s capital Bamako by renewed fighting in the country.
Both clubs were in Mali to honor CAF Champions League engagements, but have been caught in the middle of a tenuous political situation.
Ahly lost 0-1 to Stade Malien while Sunshine Stars drew 1-1 with Djoliba.
A first batch of the Sunshine Stars contingent left earlier after their game, but the second batch, scheduled to leave on
Tuesday morning, are now trapped amid gunfire between rebels and government forces.
Six players, two officials and two journalists are among the trapped.
Nigeria assistant coach Valere Houandinou and the Ondo State Football Agency chairman Segun Adagunodo are the two officials.
Players are Akombo Ukeyima, Ofem Inah, Alaba Adeniyi, Cameroonian Isaac Helehele, Ekundayo Ojo and goalkeeper Segun Oluwaniyi.
Journalists Tunde Shamsudeen and Samuel Odeyemi complete the party.
”The team may not leave for Nigeria due to sporadic shootings around the Aeroport International Airport, Bamako,” Shamsudeen said.
