Universal Varsity Television has brought renewed energy to student engagement with the broadcast of the University of Abuja Student Union Government (SUG) Debate, a dynamic event spotlighting the realities of student life in Nigeria. The debate, held on campus, offered a compelling platform for students to discuss their achievements, challenges, and the future of higher education.

This marks the second edition of the SUG debate at the University of Abuja, following the inaugural event hosted a decade ago at the same institution. Now returning with greater impact and national reach, the debate was spearheaded by Tayo Folorunsho, CEO of Universal Varsity Television Abuja, who also served as the event host.

“Ten years ago, we made history with the first SUG debate, giving students a voice to talk about the issues that matter most to them,” said Tayo. “Today, I’m proud to bring it back—this time with the power of broadcast media to amplify those voices across the country.”

Tayo emphasized that the 2025 edition is more than a revival—it’s a celebration of progress. “This isn’t just another debate. It’s a reflection of how far we’ve come as a university community and a testament to the power of youth voices. It’s about giving students a national platform to express their thoughts, their struggles, and their dreams.”

The event brought together passionate student debaters who tackled pressing questions around academic life, personal growth, and systemic challenges. Topics included how students balance academic pressures with personal responsibilities, the milestones they are proud of, and the persistent obstacles in their educational journey.

The program also featured insights from distinguished guests, including ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Police Force, who addressed student safety, and Peter Akah, renowned Human Rights and Youth Advocate, who spoke on student rights and empowerment.

Representing university leadership, Professor Patricia Manko Lar, Acting Vice Chancellor, opened the debate with an inspiring message reaffirming the institution’s commitment to student-centered policies. Dr. Idoko Sunday Idoko, Dean of Student Affairs, participated in open dialogue with students, offering administrative perspectives on key issues raised.

“This debate goes beyond competition,” Tayo said in his closing remarks. “It’s about connection, empowerment, and visibility. Our students are not just learners—they’re future leaders, change-makers, and innovators. Universal Varsity TV is committed to telling their stories and giving them the spotlight they deserve.”
