Two Years of Becoming: A story of faith, fight, and impact

Two years ago, Oluwafunmike Esther Salami stood at a crossroads. With no funding, no sponsors, and no spotlight, she made a quiet but life-altering decision: to respond to the pain she saw around her children missing out on education, families without clean water, communities forgotten. Armed only with faith and a fire in her heart, she took a leap. That leap became the Funmike Empowerment Foundation (FEF).

What started as one woman’s burden has grown into a lifeline for thousands. In the quiet village of Kuje, Abuja, and at St. Thomas Anglican Primary School in Ososa, Ogun State, the Foundation drilled boreholes that brought clean water to nearly 10,000 people ending a 16-year water crisis for an entire school. In cities like Lagos and Ibadan, free medical outreaches began reaching the sick and overlooked with screenings, consultations, health education, and life-saving medication.

The vision began to spread not through noise, but through impact. Partnerships with forward-thinking organizations like Rest Realty, Land Republic, Besitz Group, and Luminous Hills helped amplify the work. In Ajegunle, over 1,000 lives were touched. Children beamed with pride as they received their first custom-made school bags, and parents walked home with food supplies that would feed their families for weeks. In Makoko, a community often left behind, nearly 700 individuals were served with food, educational supplies, and healthcare.

One day, Funmike and her team visited the Heart of Gold Hospice Home in Surulere, where children with disabilities were given more than just supplies they were given dignity. Bags of food, toiletries, and essentials were delivered with love, and for many of the children, it was a reminder that they were not forgotten.

But the work didn’t stop there. In just two years, over 200 volunteers have been trained and mobilized young, passionate Nigerians stepping up as agents of change, helping run outreach programs in health, education, and food security across multiple states.

At the center of FEF’s mission is a deep belief in education. Full university scholarships have already changed the lives of students like Adeyinka Olufemi Benjamin at the University of Lagos and Shittu-Are Atinuke at Lagos State University. And now, on May 17, 2025, as the Foundation celebrates its 2nd Anniversary & Scholarship Award Night, 25 more students will be awarded full tuition scholarships not as a reward, but as an investment in their future.

As FEF looks to its third year, the vision continues to grow. Plans are underway to launch Learnity, a vocational trade school designed to equip young people with marketable, life-changing skills. New health programs are being mapped out. And strategies to secure long-term funding are in motion, all with one goal in mind: to reach more lives with dignity and purpose.

Funmike never set out to build a legacy she simply couldn’t ignore the need. And in doing so, she sparked a movement.

From rural villages to city streets, the Funmike Empowerment Foundation is showing that you don’t need millions to make impact  you just need to care enough to begin.
