In a groundbreaking effort to combat widow poverty in Nigeria, 16-year-old Emmanuel Olamide Folorunsho, in partnership with the non-governmental organization Total Life Concern (TLC), has disbursed N3.3 million in business grants to 11 widows under the initiative Capital For Her.

The empowerment scheme, which culminated in a handover ceremony at Magodo Phase 1, Lagos, marked a rare show of youth-led philanthropy aimed at fostering financial independence among widows through small-scale enterprise funding.

According to Folorunsho, “My goal was to empower them to become financially independent. By investing in their businesses, we help them not just survive but thrive.”

TLC Convener, Mrs. Edirin Essiet, noted that the project aligns with their mission of empowering marginalized populations. She praised Folorunsho’s initiative as “visionary” and a model of what youth leadership can achieve.

Looking beyond the grants, Folorunsho plans to establish a support network for widows, offering mentorship, business training, and resource sharing. She encouraged other young Nigerians to take initiative in solving problems in their communities.

“Empowerment is not just about giving money; it’s about building a community and equipping women with the tools they need for success,” she said.

The Capital For Her initiative is already attracting attention from international development groups, hinting at the potential for expansion across more states in Nigeria.

In a society where widows often face economic and cultural challenges, Folorunsho’s effort serves as a timely intervention and a reminder that meaningful change can start with one determined individual, regardless of age.

Some of the beneficiaries who received crucial financial support shared their plans to enhance their business operations and achieve their dreams, showcasing the transformative potential of the grants.

Among the recipients, Toyin Omadome expressed excitement about the future of her poultry feed business. “This grant will enable me to purchase higher-quality ingredients and expand my product line,” said Omadome. “I hope to reach more local farmers and contribute to the agricultural growth of our community.”

Ossai Angela, who runs a small foodstuff business, shared her vision for improvement. “With this funding, I can ensure a more consistent supply of goods and improve my inventory management,” she stated. “I believe this will help me serve my customers better and ultimately grow my business.”

Chinwe Maduka, another beneficiary, plans to take her clothing enterprise to the next level. “I will be using the grant to buy a container that will serve as my stall while I transition into a full-fledged boutique,” she explained. “I have always dreamed of having my own storefront where I can showcase my designs and offer more variety to my customers.”
