Nigeria is mourning the passing of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who died at the age of 96.

His death marks the end of an era for many who regarded him as a beacon of justice, fairness, and national unity.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Cultural Credibility Development Initiative (CCDI) described Adebanjo as a “dear friend and caring brother” to Ndigbo, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to fostering peace, equity, and political inclusiveness across Nigeria.

The statement, signed by CCDI President Ide Goddy Uwazurike and Secretary Steve Nwabuko, highlighted Adebanjo’s legacy as a “detribalized Nigerian, an astute politician, and a fearless advocate for democracy.”

A staunch disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Adebanjo remained a vocal critic of nepotism and tribalism, advocating for good governance, rule of law, and power-sharing among Nigeria’s diverse regions. As the leader of Afenifere, he championed electoral fairness, justice, and national unity.

Adebanjo was instrumental in strengthening ties between the Yoruba and Igbo communities. He was a founding member of the Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Coalition (SN-MBC), which sought equitable power rotation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. He was also one of the strongest voices calling for the unconditional release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Pa Adebanjo was the greatest bridge-builder between the South West and the South East since the end of the civil war,” CCDI noted. “His unwavering support for the Igbo people, his advocacy for justice, and his dream of seeing an Igbo president will forever be remembered.”

The group lamented that Adebanjo did not live to see some of his aspirations fulfilled, including Kanu’s release and the election of an Igbo president.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, CCDI extended condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the Yoruba nation, and all Nigerians, describing his death as a great loss to democracy and the struggle for national cohesion. May his soul rest in peace.
