From Nigeria to the World: Tale of Kayode Amusan, rising scholar in computational linguistics

By Dr Amore K. P.

Kayode Victor Amusan, a Nigerian PhD student in Computational Linguistics, has established himself as a promising figure in the fields of linguistics and artificial intelligence. Currently pursuing his doctoral studies in the United States, Kayode’s journey has been marked by significant academic achievements, leadership roles, and groundbreaking research that bridge the gap between linguistics and technology.

Kayode’s academic excellence began early. In 2015, he received the Best Graduating Student of the Year Award at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Nigeria, a recognition of his outstanding performance in linguistics. This achievement set the foundation for his future success. He then moved to the United States to continue his studies, where he earned the Schaefer Linguistics Award in 2022 from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), further solidifying his reputation as an exceptional scholar in the field.

In addition to his academic awards, Kayode was recognized with the Outstanding Student of English Award in 2023 at SIUE. This honor celebrated his excellence in English language studies and his contributions to the university’s academic community. Kayode also served as a Student Ambassador for the Office of International Affairs at SIUE in 2022, a role that allowed him to represent international students and foster cultural exchange. His leadership and involvement in the international student community demonstrated his commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.

Kayode’s research has also garnered attention. His innovative approach to linguistics has been supported through several competitive grants. In 2021, he received a grant that included a tuition waiver for one year and a $984 stipend. This financial support enabled him to focus on his research, which centers on the application of AI in language processing. His current project, titled “Performance Analysis of BERT AI Transformer in Recognizing Nominalized Adjectives within Fused Noun Phrase Structures,” examines the ability of BERT, an advanced AI model, to identify complex linguistic structures. This research aims to enhance how AI systems process natural language, particularly in identifying nuanced syntactic and semantic features.

Kayode’s achievements have been recognized at the international level. In April 2024, his paper was named Runner Up for the Global Souths Conference Best Paper Award at the University of Louisiana, highlighting the impact of his research in the global academic community. His work continues to push the boundaries of Natural Language Processing (NLP), contributing to the development of more sophisticated language models.

Throughout his academic career, Kayode has demonstrated exceptional skill, leadership, and dedication to advancing the field of computational linguistics. His research has the potential to transform the way AI systems understand and interact with human language, with wide-ranging implications for natural language processing, machine learning, and AI development. As he continues to build on his impressive achievements, Kayode Victor Amusan’s work is poised to make a lasting impact on both linguistics and artificial intelligence.
