Unions flay OOU over staff recruitments, promotions

By DAUD OLATUNJI

ABEOKUTA—Three non-Academic Staff Unions of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, yesterday, condemned alleged “selective” staff recruitment and promotions by the management of the institution.

The unions: Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non – Academic Staff Union of Educational and Related Institutions, NASU and National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT, in a joint statement by their leaders said: “Arbitrary and secret staff recruitment stands rejected.”

According to the statement, “no fewer than 28 non-academic staff have been recruited secretly in the last 24 months by the university management while a good number of others were also promoted during the same period. The University management’s attitude of employing through the back door is totally rejected.

“The promotion of staff that was supposed to be done as and when due was arbitrarily done. Also, some staff were selectively promoted while the majority of the employees were not and we observed that the promotion process did not follow due process.

“The unions hereby use this medium to once again reject the promotion exercise in its totality and call for a revisit of the entire process of promotion from 2009 till date.”

Speaking further, on behalf of the other unions leaders, the Chairman SSANU,Taiwo Egberongbe, said that the SSANU, NAAT and NASU had also  dissociated  themselves from all “forms of appointments carried out within the same period by the management.

He disclosed that, the unions had  given the management a warning strike ultimatum over unpaid salary arrears and other entitlements that had lapsed yesterday, warning that they may call for “indefinite total strike action,”  if the outstanding unpaid June, August, September and October 2010 arrears are not settled immediately.
