The Nigerian tennis scene is abuzz with excitement over the emergence of 11-year-old Mofifunoluwa Atilola as one of the sport’s most promising talents.
With over 30 titles to her name, Atilola has quickly become a significant figure at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, captivating fans and fellow athletes alike.
One of Nigeria’s oldest tennis clubs which opened in 1895 is among many taking note of the notable serves and strokes of this child prodigy.
Born in 2013, Mofifunoluwa’s journey into tennis began at a very young age when her father, Shina Atilola, introduced her to the sport. From her first steps on the court, it was clear that she possessed a natural talent and an unyielding passion for tennis.
Her father recalls, “I first brought her to the tennis court over nine years ago while I was training. The moment she started imitating my exercises, I knew she was destined for greatness.”
Since then, Atilola has made waves in various age grade competitions, competing in U-12, U-14, and U-16 tournaments. Her achievements include winning a minimum of one title in each category, solidifying her status as a dominant force in Nigerian tennis.
Between 2021 and 2024 alone, she claimed an impressive 23 titles, showcasing her skills and dedication to the sport.
Some of her recent laurels include triumphing at the 2024 CBN Junior Open U-14 , NNPC-SNEPCo Junior tennis championship, and the prestigious Sapetro Futures Tennis Championships.
She stole the spotlight at the inaugural FE&P Invitational Masters held at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, further establishing her reputation as a top contender in youth tennis.
Mofifunoluwa’s relentless pursuit of excellence has not gone unnoticed, as she has become a role model for aspiring young athletes across Nigeria. Her trademark pink shoes have become a symbol of her unique style and determination, as she trains regularly at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
As her journey continues to inspire others, Shina Atilola expresses pride in his daughter’s achievements, stating, “There hasn’t been a tournament she entered in recent years where she didn’t reach the final. Her commitment and resilience are truly remarkable.
“In this new year (2025), the goal is to get her to play more on the African continent and end the year in the top 100 of the junior rankings”.
Mofifunoluwa is not just a talented athlete; she embodies the spirit of perseverance and ambition that can inspire a new generation of tennis players in Nigeria. With her sights set on future competitions, the tennis world eagerly anticipates what this young prodigy will accomplish next.
“In the next five years, I want to become the number one player in the world and set new records in tennis,” the 11-year-old tennis prodigy stated in a recent interview.
For Nigerians, this may be an opportunity to dream big again in tennis after the exploits of Nduka Odizor, the highest-ever ranked Nigerian player in the sport.
With age and time on her side, and most importantly, support from corporate bodies and individuals, Mofifunoluwa may bring the much-needed sunshine to Nigerian in tennis courts.
