FosaDev targets zero hunger, better health with Christmas outreach in NIFOR

In a bid to alleviate hunger and promote healthier living in underserved communities, the Florence Osarentin Development Initiative (FosaDev) has launched its maiden community outreach program in the NIFOR community, Edo State.

The initiative, tagged “A Smile at Christmas,” combined health services and food distribution to support residents grappling with economic hardship.

The event, held with support from Marie Stopes International (MSI), saw FosaDev provide vital health services and distribute over 100 food packs containing staples such as rice, vegetable oil, and tomato paste to elderly and low-income individuals.

Highlighting the organization’s mission to improve access to healthcare and reduce hunger in vulnerable populations, FosaDev’s Executive Director, Yvonne Ogieomo, stated:

“The ‘A Smile at Christmas’ program aims to ensure good health, promote well-being, and mitigate the effects of hunger, especially during this festive season marked by economic challenges.”

The outreach emphasized sexual and reproductive health education, with women and girls receiving services focused on family planning, menstrual hygiene, and overall reproductive health.

Underscoring the importance of these services in a community with low uptake of health initiatives, Ogieomo noted:

“This program is crucial in improving the health and decision-making abilities of women and girls in underserved areas. By empowering them with knowledge and services, we hope to enhance their futures.”

She added: “In the long term, this program seeks to strengthen access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and enhance the overall well-being of community members.”

In addition to reproductive health, free screenings for hypertension and blood sugar levels were conducted. A total of 57 individuals accessed the screenings and family planning services during the program.

FosaDev complemented the health services with the distribution of food packs to ease the strain on vulnerable households. The organization plans to make the outreach an annual event to expand its impact on other communities.

This inaugural outreach marks a significant step in FosaDev’s commitment to addressing the twin challenges of hunger and inadequate healthcare in low-income communities.

As economic conditions remain tough for many Nigerians, initiatives like “A Smile at Christmas” underscore the vital role of non-governmental organizations in bridging gaps in food security and healthcare access. With the success of this pilot program, FosaDev is poised to bring hope and relief to even more communities in the future.
