STEM: Researcher advocates holistic education with psychological support

Renowned researcher, Mr Asongo Terkuma has unveiled findings that highlight the psychological barriers hindering STEM education, with a specific focus on physics. His research reveals how non-academic factors like test anxiety, gender, and school location significantly impact students’ ability to succeed in physics, particularly in mastering wave motion concepts.

Terkuma said: “This study reveals the profound ways in which psychological stressors and environmental conditions shape academic outcomes.

“These factors are often overlooked but play a critical role in exacerbating educational disparities.”

According to him, key findings include: Test Anxiety: Identified as a major obstacle, with varying severity based on students’ gender and geographic location.

Environmental challenges: Students in rural areas face compounded difficulties due to inadequate resources and infrastructure, which exacerbate test anxiety and widen performance gaps.

Policy implications: Emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to bridge educational gaps between urban and rural regions.

Terkuma has also restated that there is a need for a holistic educational reform that combines: Psychological support to mitigate test anxiety.

Also, infrastructure improvements in underprivileged schools and teaching strategies tailored to students’ diverse needs.

Terkuma said, “By addressing these issues, my strategy aims to promote equitable access to quality education, reduce stress-induced academic failures, and foster a healthier learning environment.

“In Nigeria, where urban-rural disparities in education are stark, these findings offer a roadmap for transformative change. “Enhancing rural educational infrastructure and incorporating psychological support systems could drastically improve academic outcomes, fostering resilience and confidence in students regardless of their background.

“This research is not just about identifying problems, it’s about offering actionable solutions that can revolutionize education and empower students to thrive in STEM fields.”

Terkuma’s research underscores the need for global educational reforms that integrate psychological well-being into traditional academic systems. This holistic approach not only enhances student performance but also equips them with the resilience needed to succeed in their educational journeys and beyond.
