A health empowerment programme aimed at promoting the wellbeing of female street sweepers was lunched in Lagos over the weekend by Waterlight Save Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation.

Speaking at the launch of the outreach held at the premises of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency in Ijora, Lagos, President and Founder , Waterlight Save Initiative, Dr. Ero Ibhafidon, explained that the  program sought to provide essential items, health support, and empowerment opportunities to enhance the quality of life for the beneficiaries. 

Describing the street sweepers as unsung heroes, he however, lamented that they were often overlooked and underappreciated, even though they played  a vital role in maintaining cleaner environments for millions of  Lagos residents.

He said: “These women are the unsung heroes of our cities. These women, often unrecognized for their vital contributions, play a pivotal role in maintaining cleaner environments for millions of residents, often at great personal sacrifice

“They represent resilience, dedication, and the relentless spirit of survival. Yet, many endure harsh conditions with limited access to healthcare and little recognition for their sacrifices”.

The program according to Ibhafidon, would also serve as a platform for dialogue and empowerment. 

He disclosed that: “This outreach is not just about providing support; it’s about affirming the dignity and value of every individual.

“For the first time, these women have a voice and an opportunity to share their challenges and concerns. Through this initiative, they can collaborate on sustainable solutions, taking ownership of their lives and creating positive change. By amplifying their voices and promoting their participation, the program aims to foster a sense of community and solidarity among the street sweepers.

“By addressing their basic needs and providing them with opportunities for growth and development, the program seeks to make a meaningful and lasting impact on their lives”.

He further stated that the effort aligned with the organisation’s broader mission of alleviating poverty, improving access to healthcare, and fostering community resilience, emphasis that “At Waterlight Save Initiative, we believe in justice, equity, and a society where no one is left behindbehind”.

He therefore urged Nigerians and government  to join hands in building a society that values every contribution and ensures opportunities for all to thrive.
