ABEOKUTA— A Nephronolgist in Ogun state, Dr. Abimbola Ajomale, has said that no fewer than 30 million Nigerians are suffering from renal impairment, urging  the National Assembly to formulate a policy that will cater for  kidney patients and others in the society.

Ajomale, spoke while addressing newsmen, yesterday, during a joint briefing organised by Kidney Consultants International in conjunction with Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, FIBAN, and the state Correspondents’ Chapel to mark this year’s World Kidney Day.

The Nephrologist who is also Resident Medical Officer of the NGO, said although available statistics were hospital-based but “one out of every five Nigerians have a form of optimal renal dysfunction.”

He said some of the major symptoms as well as causes of renal failure to include bloody urine, difficulty in breathing, swollen face, getting tired easily, excessive alcohol intake and intake of spicy food.

While urging the National Assembly to enact a law that would cater for kidney patients, the NGO’s Operation’s Director Adebayo Sokunbi, advocated that a proper renal policy would include a renal registry with a proper data bank system.
