Former Chairman of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA) Governing Board and APC 2023 Senatorial Candidate for Benue South, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has commended the Benue State Governor, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his exceptional leadership and commitment to the welfare of state workers, demonstrated by his approval of a new minimum wage of N75,000- exceeding the National Minimum Wage benchmark of N70,000 set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July this year.

In a press statement issued today, Onjeh described the decision as historic and a clear indication of Governor Alia’s compassion and prioritization of ordinary citizens in his developmental agenda. He lauded the Governor for accommodating the concerns of the workers’ union, thereby upholding the dignity of labour and setting an exemplary standard in governance.

Onjeh also commended the Benue State workers’ union for their constructive role in the negotiations that led to the agreement. He noted that their efforts align with the African Union’s recognition of labour movements as critical drivers of socio-economic development.

In the statement, Onjeh further acknowledged governors of states like Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Gombe, Ondo, and Kogi for approving minimum wages above the national benchmark, and states such as Anambra, Katsina, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Oyo, Borno, and Osun for adopting the N70,000 minimum wage. He urged governors yet to make pronouncements on the matter to follow suit promptly, and ensure the timely implementation of these policies.

“While the approval of minimum wage increases is commendable, their benefits are diminished without prompt implementation,” Onjeh remarked. He highlighted Governor Alia’s consistent prioritization of timely salary payments since assuming office, earning him the nickname “Mr. 25th” for his commitment to paying workers on the 25th of every month.

Onjeh noted that Governor Alia’s ability to tackle what previous administrations in the state have described as “insurmountable challenges”, such as the payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, has restored dignity to workers and brought significant economic relief to households. The Governor’s latest decision to increase the minimum wage further solidifies his legacy of visionary leadership.

The statement emphasized that timely and increased salary payments do not only benefit workers but also stimulate the entire economy. “Paid workers can meet their financial obligations, settle debts, and inject money into local businesses, thereby empowering traders, service providers, and artisans,” Onjeh explained. He described the ripple effect as one that extends to farmers, entrepreneurs, and other labour force categories, ensuring vibrant economic activity across the state.

Onjeh criticized opposition figures in Benue State who, despite failing to meet the previous minimum wage during their tenure, have now chosen to downplay Governor Alia’s strides. He urged these individuals to either maintain dignified silence or join hands with the current administration to advance the state, emphasizing that elections are over and the time has come for patriotism and progress over divisive politics.

“It is better to contribute ideas to improve governance rather than wish for the failure of an incumbent administration,” Onjeh stated. “The opposition can always campaign on promises to build on existing achievements instead of attempting to undermine successes for political gain.”

In conclusion, Onjeh praised Governor Alia’s approval of the N75,000 minimum wage and his consistent payment of salaries as hallmarks of compassionate, committed, and competent governance. He expressed confidence that these efforts would yield long-term benefits for Benue State, fostering economic growth, improving living standards, and laying a foundation for sustainable development.

Onjeh called on all Benue citizens to rally behind Governor Alia’s vision and work together for the betterment of the state.
