EEDC reaffirms continued operations amid mainpower subsidiary’s new license

EEDC reaffirms continued operations amid mainpower subsidiary’s new license

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has addressed rumors suggesting it has ceased operations due to the licensing of its subsidiary, Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC). This move came after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) transferred regulatory authority to the EERC.

Earlier this week, EERC granted Mainpower an interim operating license to oversee electricity distribution within Enugu State. However, EEDC’s Head of Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, confirmed on Friday that EEDC remains active and continues its operations in other southeastern states—Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.

“We want to assure our esteemed customers, vendors, service providers, and stakeholders that EEDC still exists as a holding company to Mainpower, which is handling Enugu’s electricity distribution,” Ezeh stated. He appealed to customers in Enugu to remain calm, as Mainpower will operate under EEDC’s commitment to quality service.

Following the Electricity Act 2023, approved by President Bola Tinubu, states now have the authority to manage their own electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, shifting regulatory oversight from NERC to state commissions like EERC.
