ENUGU—THE 25 hunters with 19 dane guns from Zamfara State, arrested by the police at Nsukka, Enugu State, in January, have been granted bail, although investigation is still on-going, Enugu State Commissioner of Police , Mr. Job Danazumi Doma, disclosed yesterday.

The police commissioner told newsmen that the suspects were taken to their villages in Zamfara to confirm their proper identities as hunters and after confirmation was made, they were released on bail.

He, however, stated that further investigation into the matter was currently going on to determine if there was any other motive aside hunting expedition which the hunters claimed.

According to the police boss, “after conducting a thorough search on the arrested hunters, there was nothing incriminating found on any of them hence the decision to grant them bail.

“They have been released on bail. They were taken to their villages for proper identification as hunters which they claimed to be”.

“After that was confirmed, they were released on bail. But investigation is still ongoing to determine if there was any other motive, aside hunting expedition.”

Vanguard learnt that the suspects were transferred from Enugu State police command to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, after granting them bail on Sunday from where they were finally released.

The suspects were reportedly traveling from Zamfara State in a bus bearing Zamfara State government number plate when they were intercepted by the police at Okpuje, near Nsukka, last month.

The Divisional Police Officer at the Nsukka police station, however, was quoted to have said that the suspects were hunters who were traveling from Zamfara on a hunting expedition to settle at Adani in Uzo-Uwani local government area of the state, and not actually members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram as reported by the media.
