ABUJA—European Union, EU, and Nigerian government have embarked on a project to check illegal movement of people and goods across the Nigerian-Benin Republic border.

Head of EU delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, David Macrae, in a chat with Vanguard in Abuja yesterday, disclosed that the current project was intended to “upgrade the border between Benin and Nigeria in the South-West to create a single mode that would make it easier for people and the authorities to regulate the traffic in the borders.

The EU envoy, however, identified the poor state of the nation’s infrastructure, coupled with lack of maintenance culture as likely draw-back in Nigeria’s efforts to modernise her border infrastructure.

He said: “The general challenge in Nigeria has to do with inadequate infrastructure and also the development of human resources and availability of personnel, the right level of education and competence to work with us at times.”
