The ex-British and Commonwealth boxing champion, Peter Oboh, has congratulated Mr. Keir Starmer, the new British Prime Minister.

Recall that Britain’s head of state King Charles III officially appointed Labour leader Keir Starmer as prime minister on Friday during an audience at Buckingham Palace.

Keir Starmer became Britain’s new prime minister as his centre-left opposition Labour party swept to a landslide general election victory. It ends 14 years of right-wing Conservative rule.

Peter Oboh reacts

Reacting to Starmer’s emergence as the UK’s Prime Minister, Oboh, the pugilist-turned-cleric, said although he loved some of Rishi Sunak’s policies, generally, standards had fallen.

So Starmer, hopefully, would bring positive changes.

“To be realistic,” Oboh said, “the UK has gone down in standard compared to a few decades ago. I really hope the new prime minister, Mr Keir Starmer, of the Labour Party, can make a change.

“It will not be easy. But it is possible.

“Regarding Mr Sunak, I love some of his policies. But not all. For instance, the regular importation of foreign workers, leading to unemployment within the UK; I did not buy that.

“But the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda makes some sense. This is because if not controlled asylum seekers will be more than citizens.

“To be realistic, I feel happy for Mr. Keir Starmer. And I feel really sad for Mr Sunak. That Mr Sunak achieved what all the British politicians dream about is something we must appreciate. Nobody can take that from him.

“However, I wish Mr Starmer good luck in this huge responsibility to reposition the United Kingdom.”
