No fewer than four persons including a military personnel were Frirday killed in an auto-crash which occurred at a check point in Sabo Ngeri Nairabi, in Toro local government of Buachi State.
The accident, which involved a tanker and two opel Vectra salon cars, occurred when the tanker driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle as a result of brake failure and rammed into the two vehicles waiting to be passed by soldiers at the check point.
An eye witness, Shuabu Umar who narrated the incident to Saturday Vanguard said the tanker which was believed to be carrying black oil from one of the southern states to Bauchi lost control of his vehicle on a slope at Nairabi and rammed into the two cars waiting to be passed at the military check point.
Umar said the military personnel who was killed was on a routine checking of vehicles occasioned by the current security challenges in the Northern part of the country, when the trailer swerved and hence it was too late for him to escape.
Umar who lamented regular occurrence of accidents at the particular check point, said,“I think it is better for the check point to be shifted to another place, because many people have died at the Nairabi Military check point in recent times.
’’Last year, about 30 persons were burnt beyond recognition in a similar accident which involved three trailers, a fully loaded petrol tanker, five buses and several other cars during the general elections. See another set of innocent Nigerians including a military man who was performing his duty just being crushed by the trailer just like that.
’’We even thank God that the content of the tanker was black oil and not petrol or diesel, otherwise, last year’s episode would have repeated itself here,” Umar added.
Confirming the incident to newsmen, yesterday, the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Bauchi State, Sector Commander Zakaria Momoh said, “The vehicles that were involved in the accident, include two Opel Vectra cars and a tanker.
’’Six persons were affected in the accident and only one military personnel died immediately while five others that were seriously injured have been taken to hospital.”
