Sunday Afolabi, an ICT professional specializing in Cloud Computing and IT Project Management, has examined the transformative role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in healthcare.

According to Afolabi, ICT encompasses a wide range of technologies and tools used to communicate, store, process, and exchange information electronically. “ICT can help bridge the information gap that exists among various stakeholders and health workers,” he noted.

This can be achieved through the creation of secure databases accessible to those who need it. Citing David Blumenthal, he emphasized, “Information is the lifeblood of medicine.”

One of the key technologies highlighted by Afolabi is the Electronic Health Record (EHR). EHRs allow healthcare providers to access and update patients’ information in real-time, leading to more coordinated and effective care. Afolabi explained that the use of EHRs can reduce the likelihood of errors and duplication, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Afolabi elaborated on various ways ICT can enhance healthcare delivery. Beyond EHRs, he mentioned Health Information Exchange (HIE) as a crucial tool. HIE enables different healthcare organizations to share patient information securely, facilitating better coordination of care and reducing medical errors.

Another significant application of ICT in healthcare is Telemedicine, also known as Remote Clinical Consultation.

Telemedicine leverages ICT to enable remote consultations and monitoring of patients, particularly those in rural or underserved areas. Afolabi highlighted the critical role telemedicine played during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing continuous care despite physical distancing requirements.

Additionally, technologies like Edge Computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) are instrumental in collecting real-time health data from wearable devices. These advancements enable continuous monitoring and timely interventions, further enhancing patient care.

While discussing the current state of the Nigerian healthcare system, Afolabi acknowledged that there are significant gaps. He pointed out that Nigeria’s healthcare sector lacks comprehensive ICT infrastructure and adequately trained personnel. To address these deficiencies, Afolabi emphasized the importance of investing in both technology and human resources.

Looking ahead, Afolabi is optimistic about the potential improvements in Nigeria’s health system over the next five years. He mentioned the National Health ICT Vision, which provides a framework for using ICT to improve patient outcomes. However, he stressed the need to translate this vision into reality through holistic investment in ICT infrastructure and training.

Afolabi concluded by outlining the critical interventions needed to enhance healthcare delivery in Nigeria. He advocated for significant investment in ICT infrastructure, including reliable internet connectivity, modern medical equipment, and secure data storage systems. Moreover, he underscored the necessity of training healthcare personnel to effectively utilize these technologies.

By adopting a comprehensive approach that integrates advanced technologies and skilled professionals, Afolabi believes that Nigeria can make substantial strides in healthcare delivery. With strategic investments and a commitment to leveraging ICT, the Nigerian healthcare system can achieve improved patient outcomes and greater efficiency.

Sunday Afolabi’s noted that by embracing technologies such as EHR, HIE, Telemedicine, and IoT, and by addressing current challenges, Nigeria’s healthcare sector can transform into a more effective and efficient system, ultimately benefiting patients across the nation.
