Even in retirement from active football, Super Falcons former captain, Florence Omagbemi, continues to set records, as she was named yesterday into the United States of America’s Soccer Leagues Women’s Hall of Fame. She is the first African female player to get such honour.

Omagbemi, who is eyeing the Super Falcons job, had captained the national team for 13 years, the longest ever by any Nigerian, leading the team to win the African Women Championship (AWC) title on four occasions and appeared in four FIFA world Cup as well as leading the team to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games soccer even.

Announcing her inclusion in the United Soccer Leagues Women’s Hall of Fame yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer, United Soccer Leagues, Alec Papadakis, said that Omagbemi was chosen for her contributions to the organization and the sport of soccer.

The letter from Beach FC 3200 Dam Neck Road, Suite 104, Virginia Beach, VA 23453, which was made available to newsmen yesterday said: “Congratulations Omagbemi! You have been selected to the United Soccer Leagues Women’s Hall of Fame for your contributions to the organization and the sport of soccer.

According to the letter, the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held during this year’s Annual General Meeting on Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa, adding that a short reception would proceed the dinner.

Papadakis explained that the USL Hall of Fame was founded to honor the men, women, and organizations that have helped make USL a success through the years. “We want to recognize you for your tremendous efforts and personal sacrifices made on behalf of USL and the sport of soccer in North America.

“This year we have chosen to divide the USL Hall of Fame into three distinct wings – Men’s, Women’s and Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) – to distinguish each inductee further for their particular contributions.

“The Class of 2011 is comprised of inductees for each wing in the Builders, Coaches, and Players categories. Members were nominated from a pool of qualified candidates based on their abilities, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to their organization, USL and the sport in general. A vote of USL teams and Hall of Fame members determined this year’s inductees.

“As always, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication through the years and all the best in the future.

Speaking from her base in Virginia yesterday, Omabgemi said she was excited for the honour, stating that it is a clear indication that her contributions to the game of women soccer was recognized by the people.

On her dream of coaching the Super Falcons, Omagbemi said: “I will appreciate it if my people back home consider me for the job. I have been in coaching business since I retired from active playing career about six years ago.
