AWKA-Anambra State Elders Council has appealed to organized labour in Anambra State to call off the on-going industrial action and return to the negotiating table with government in the interest of the state.

This comes as Ebonyi State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Tuesday waded into the one month industrial action embarked upon by organized labour over the refusal of the state government to implement the Minimum Wage Act for workers in the state.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting at the Governor’s Lodge, chairman of Anambra State Elders Council, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, said resumption of work would pave the way for all outstanding issues to be ironed out through proper dialogue.

Ikedife said the council believed the state government had implemented the minimum wage as stipulated by the law by paying N18,500, assuring that whatever anomalies that were noticed in the implementation of the minimum wage, including observed computer errors, would be looked into and addressed.

Vanguard learnt that the action of Ebonyi State CAN became necessary due the accusation and counter-accusation between Labour and government on the matter and also the crippling of government activities since the commencement of the strike.

In a reaction, the State Caretaker Committee Secretary of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Macx Nnaji who confirmed the meeting between organized labour and the clergymen weekend, stated that the objective was to resolve the industrial dispute which has eaten deep into the machinery of the state.
