LONDON (AFP) – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger fears France right-back Bacary Sagna suffered a serious ankle injury during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Sagna landed awkwardly after a collision with Spurs defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the second half at White Hart Lane and was stretchered off before being taken to hospital for scans.

Wenger was still waiting for the results of those tests when he spoke to the press after the match, but he believes there is a good chance Sagna will be sidelined for several weeks.

“We are very worried about his injury. He is in hospital at the moment but the first signs don’t look good at all. It is fibula and ankle that has to be checked, we will know tonight,” Wenger said.

“I think he was pushed quite hard but I don’t know what happened when he landed but straight away he wanted to be substituted.”

Sagna’s injury means he is almost certain to have to withdraw from France’s final two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Albania and Bosnia, which take place over the next two weeks.

France can finish top of Group D if they take four points from the qualifiers.
