Suspected armed robbers on Thursday invaded the Bayelsa state House of Assembly and burgled the officer of the Speaker, Mr. Nestor Binabo and the Accounts Department of the Assembly.
The robbers were said to have made away with cash and valuables in the Speaker’s office but they were unable to open the safe in the Accounts department.
Investigations revealed the armed Policemen guarding the complex were caught unawares and did not know about the robbery operation until their attention was drawn to it by the workers on Friday morning when they resumed for work.
Binabo’s office was turned upside down and the robbers searched for cash and other valuables after which they left for the Accounts department which was also ransacked for cash.
Checks at the accounts department indicated that the robbers in their desperate attempt to open the safe used all sorts of equipments to open the safe but they did not succeed.
One of the workers who pleaded anonymity said the situation in the accounts department was terrible as files and documents littered the ground while the door and the protector were vandalized.
“When we resumed work this morning, we discovered that our department has been burgled. The robbers turned it upside down. We saw evidence that the robbers attempted to open the safe but they did not succeed. They hit the safe with various objects but they could not open it” the source said.
After the operation, the robbers were suspected to have escaped through the canteen door because the windows which led to the complex fence were broken.
The robbery incident has thrown the workers into panic as the Police have already commenced investigation working on a conspiracy theory of the involvement of an insider. Also the Policemen on duty are said be afraid as the leadership of the Assembly are planning an overhaul of the entire security system to unmask the masterminds of the robbery incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Eguaveon Emokpae who confirmed the incident said the matter was reported to the command and investigation as commenced.
