ABEOKUTA — OGUN State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Dayo Soremi, narrowly escaped death Sunday evening when armed bandits attacked him and killed his driver.
The attack, Vanguard learnt, took place about 8:30 pm in Olodo village, along the Abeokuta/Ibadan road in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State on his way to Ibadan.
His driver, Mr Kunle Onigbinde, was said to have been shot dead by the robbers when he attempted to escape after his boss lexus jeep was attacked.
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nickolas Nkemdeme, said he did not know if the attack on the PDP Chairman had political under tone or not.
Mr. Nkemdeme said the police had started investigation into the incident saying, “We are aware of it, they were attacked on the way to Ibadan, we are investigating.”
Also, confirming the incident, Acting Secretary of the state PDP, Mr. Semiu Sodipo, ruled out any political reason for the attack and noted that it was an armed robbery attack.
Sodipo said the driver was shot dead while trying to make a u-turn to escape from the scene.
He added that the robbers made away with the vehicle and other valuables of the PDP chairman which included his handsets and money.
