All the Traditional Rulers in Enugu state have jointly confirmed that there was established zoning of Governorship position among the three Senatorial districts in the state.

The Monarchs also stated that it was the turn of the Enugu East Senatorial District to produce the next governor of the state in the 2023 general election.

They, therefore, urged all the political parties that wish to participate in the 2023 gubernatorial Election in the state to pick their candidates from Enugu East Senatorial district which they unequivocally stated comprised of Isi-Uzo, Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government council areas.

Rising from a meeting of the general assembly of the traditional rulers of Enugu state at the historic Eastern Nigeria House of Chiefs in Enugu, on Tuesday, the Monarchs said they reviewed and affirmed their position as the ultimate custodian of the culture and tradition of their kingdoms, with responsibility for peace, security and welfare of their subjects.

They also stated that their position is apolitical, and are not expected to get involved in partisan politics, but that “on the ongoing debate regarding zoning or otherwise, of the office of the governor of Enugu state, the traditional rulers avowed the fact that the founding fathers of Enugu state, in their wisdom, mutually agreed that the prized office of the governor of the state should be rotational among it’s three Senatorial districts.”

Among the traditional rulers who signed the communique included the Chairman of Enugu state traditional rulers council, HRH, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu; Igwe Julius Nnaji of Nike; Igwe Kingsley Chime of Abia town; Igwe Abel Nwobodo of Nara clan; Igwe Osisi Itodo of Enugu-Ezike, among other revered monarchs.

The Traditional Rulers urged their colleagues in the state to refrain from partisanship in the current political developments that will imperil the essence and the dignity of the traditional institution in the state.
