WARRI—TWO top managers of the Delta Steel Company Plc, Aladja, Delta State, were arrested, weekend, and whisked to Abuja by security agents in connection with investigations into alleged financial transactions in the company.

They were detained overnight at the Ovwian Police Station, Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area, after their arrest and taken away the next day.

The company, which is owned 80 per cent by an Indian company, Global Steel Holdings Limited and 20 per cent by the Federal Government, had been in the news lately over a strike by workers, protesting the non-payment of their salaries.

The management promised to pay April and May salaries before they resumed duty, but a source said, yesterday, that some Indian workers of the company, had also downed tools.

Vanguard could not ascertain the exact reasons for their arrest, but a source said they were arrested over tax evasion, while another source hinted that it was in connection with an alleged fraud.

Acting General Manager, Public Affairs of the company, Mr. Kes Agbosa, promised to get back to our reporter when he was contacted over the matter, but did not get back as promised.
