ENUGU – FOUR members of a notorious kidnap gang that has been terrorizing residents of the university town of Nsukka and its environs in recent time have been arrested by men of the Enugu State Police Command.

The police said that the wife of Professor Ikechukwu Onuora of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and her younger sister, who were abducted by the gang last Sunday, have been rescued at Idah in Kogi State.

The victims were rescued without paying any ransom while the Jeep they were driving in at the time of their abduction had been recovered from the said hideout in Idah.

The professor’s wife and her younger sister kidnapped from Nsukka Sunday afternoon, were taken to Idah, where the kidnappers planned to contact their family members to demand for ransom.

But their plot failed as policemen from Enugu State Police Command gave members of the gang a hot chase and succeeded in apprehending one of them who revealed that the women were taken to Idah.

The State Police Commissioner, Mr. Dan’azumi Job Doma, who disclosed this while parading the suspects at the police headquarters, Enugu Tuesday, said that the command had been having some security challenges at Nsukka “and as usual we have to lay down our strategies to get at those behind the series of kidnapping at Nsukka.”

“As God will have it, they kidnapped some women on Sunday, one of them is the wife to Professor Ikechukwu Onuora of UNN. Immediately we got wind of it we gave them a chase and in the early hours of Monday, we were able to pick one of them.

“As we were driving to Idah in Kogi State to locate these women where they were kept, our men decided to get to the police station in Idah to report their presence.  One of them sighted the Jeep of the kidnapped women being driven by the kidnappers who were probably looking for where to dispose it off.

Our men gave them a chase and shot the tyres but they continued, knocking down motorcycles on the road. Eventually, two of the suspects were picked up and they led us to where the third fellow was, we picked him and rescued the women without any hurt,” the CP narrated.

Doma also announced the arrest of a suspected fraudster, Dr. Biose Goodluck Shonitan, who also goes by the name “Uche Shonitan, Bose Goodluck and Rev. Biose Lawrence” and owns four different bank accounts with which he defrauded innocent persons.

According to the CP, the renowned scammer was apprehended while trying to defraud Prof. Willy Ugwuanyi, former Commissioner for Special Duties in the state, adding that several phone calls had been received from several victims who had been defrauded of a large sum of money by the same Dr. Shonitan in Lagos State.

He, however, urged members of the public to report criminal activities promptly to the police saying such information would assist in effectively fighting crime in the society.
