LAGOS – Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has pledged to safeguard what he described as the “enormous legacy” in the state public transportation, promising to drive it to newer frontier.

Fashola, while receiving the African region and international award for “Political Commitment” for growing and doubling patronage of public transportation by the International Association of Public Transport,  UITP, at the State House, Marina, said the pioneering role of the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s administration, gave Lagos one of the best transportation systems in sub-Saharan Africa.

“We are the inheritors of an enormous legacy that we must drive to newer frontier. We must redouble our efforts to give good integrated transportation system to the people of the state,” he said.

He described the Lagos’ Bus Rapid Transit, BRT,  system as novel and best choice for public transport, promising that other transport projects like the expansion of the BRT to other parts of Lagos, construction of the light rail system and the expansion of the water routes from the current four would be given priority.

Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola while presenting the two awards Gov. Fashola said they were in recognition of his far-reaching public transport growth initiatives which aim to cater for the mobility of the ordinary commuters in a state of more than 18 million people.
