The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Anambra State branch, yesterday called on state governors to implement the N18,000 new national minimum wage already signed into law by President Jonathan Goodluck.

President of the union in the state, Mr Jerry Nnubia, who was speaking to Vanguard in his office, described the signing into law of the new minimum wage bill by the President as a welcome development.

He advised state governors in the the country and Abuja to pay workers in their respective states the new minimum wage so as to put smiles on their faces.

Nnubia’s advice came on the heels of some governors insistence that they would have to negotiate with labour in their respective states because they could not pay the new minimum wage.

He said: “The issue of state governors paying or not paying is a matter of law because the bill passed by the National Assembly has been ratified by Mr President, so the governors have no option than to obey the law.”

“We are waiting anxiously for the implementation by the state governors as soon as the circulars to states are out. It is then that we shall put machinery in motion through the NLC to make sure that the states comply,” he said.

Thanking President Jonathan for endorsing the bill, Nnubia appealed to Nigeria workers to reciprocate the gesture by increasing their input.

On his aspiration for the chairmanship of the state NLC, the NULGE boss said his ambition was borne out of his burning desire to serve workers in the state.
