MAKURDI – Group under the aegis of Benue Students’ Movement, BSM, has condemned the over three hundred percent increase in tuition at the Benue State University,  describing it as an act of prejudice against the present administration in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Makurdi, National President of the group, Mr. James Terfa, argued that the decision of the institution’s governing council to hike tuition was repugnant and unacceptable.

He noted that the economic situation at the moment did not warrant any  hike in tuition at the university, calling for a reversal “in the interest of the children of the poor who are the majority of students in the school.

It is wrong for anyone to contemplate an increment in tuition in an election year, it is never heard of anywhere in the world; that is why we feel that the decision is aimed at frustrating the reelection bid of the present administration and therefore should reverted.”

Mr. Terfa noted that the decision would be counter productive to the electoral fortunes of the Suswam led administration,  adding that the decision had forced majority of Benue students into the opposition thereby depleting the support base of the government among students.
