THE Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Cross River State, Mr Mike Igini, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, over alleged threat to his life.

In a petition titled Re: Save Cross River State from Mike Igini: A potential threat to my life,  Igini said, “I am constrained to ask for you intervention as a result of recent developments in Cross River State and the attendant threat to my life,  which though have been on-going, reached a new hight when the threats were made through a letter dated February 11, 2011 addressed to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.”

The petition read, “the said letter apart from containing obvious falsehood such as claims that I was once a teacher at Ahmadu Bello University, which is a lie, as I was never  a teacher anywhere.

“The letter contained nothing else but an open threat to my life for daring to insist that the right and proper things be done with respect to conduct of party congresses and primaries, the registration of voters; a situation which clearly seemed to be at variance with the wishes and unwholesome desires of a few self-centred elements in the state, who are bent on ensuring that the avowed intention of the president and the mandate given to INEC to ensure that a free and fair election, in which every eligible voter would be able to vote and every vote countered is also vetted,” he added.
