IT was a pitiable sight as some in-patients, whose cases were critical, were forcefully discharged from their sick beds at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba, as the strike embarked upon by workers of the hospital worsened.
Workers of the hospital are protesting the nonpayment of the approved CONTISS allowances. Union workers had commenced the strike action since February 2, this year but doctors and other few workers kept rendering skeletal services until last Thursday, when a reconciliation meeting between the management of the hospital and the union leaders ended in a stalemate.
A close source in the hospital told Vanguard that “the situation worsened when last week Thursday, medical and health workers joined the others following a stalemate in a meeting held between the union leaders and management of the hospital.”
As at press time, the hospital has been sealed up and deserted.
