Lagos, Feb. 16, 2011 (NAN) An Ebute Meta Magistrates Court, Lagos, on Wednesday ordered a 68-year-old landlord and a security man remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons over the shooting to death of an alleged armed robbery suspect.

The Magistrate, Mrs J. Ugbomoiko, ordered the landlord, Lekan Adigun, and Dele Alayande, 28, remanded for allegedly shooting to death Chidi Okoye, 25, at Iju-Ishaga– a Lagos suburb.

The court did not take the pleas of the suspects and ordered that they should remain in custody pending the advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ishaku Babaji told the court that though Adigun owned a double-barrel gun, its license expired six years ago.

Babaji said Adigun gave the gun to Alayande, a security man, to assist him in his security work on their street at Iju-Ishaga.

He said that Adigun claimed that robbers had been disturbing the neigbhourhood and on Nov. 6, 2010, the day of the incident, some men were seen walking into the street at midnight.

“Alayande shot at the men, suspecting they were armed robbers and the bullet hit Okoye, who bled to death.

“The accused did not report the incident to the police and it was a witness, Chinaso Oliseh, that reported the matter to the police following which the duo were arrested,” he said.

The Prosecutor said that Alayande also unlawfully had in his possession one expended cartridge without a valid license from the Inspector General of Police.

Babaji said the offence contravened Sections 319 (1) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and was punishable with a death on conviction.

The Magistrate adjourned the case till March 4, for further hearing.
