Umuahia – INEC has distributed 468 additional Direct Data Capture Machines (DDCM) for the ongoing registration in the state, an official has said.
Mr Edwin Enabor, INEC Public Relations Officer (PRO) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that the latest supply had brought the number of the machines in the state to 2877.
He added that INEC in the state had initially distributed 2409 DDCM, which, he said, did not go round the 2676 centers in the state.
“At the inception of the exercise we were supplied with 2409 DDCM and 267 centers were left unattended to because of the shortfall in the supply of the machines.
“Now, we have an excess supply of 201 DDCM because out of the 2676 DDCM needed in Abia, 2877 have been supplied which translate to a surplus of 201 DDCM,” he said.
On widespread complaints that the corpers undertaking the exercise did not have patient to scan the ten fingers of prospective voters, Enabor insisted that those affected must go back to their various centers to get all ten fingers scanned.
“We have instructed the corpers that they must scan all ten fingers except on the grounds that the prospective voters had no finger to be scanned.
“We have even sent people to the field to impress it upon the corpers to ensure that they complied,” he said.
Enabor said that those that did not have their ten fingers scanned may have a problem voting a candidate of their choice during the general elections.
NAN reports that in most centers in Umuahia metropolis, particularly at Union Primary School, Afara, those who had come out to register complained that the corpers were not scanning all ten fingers.
