One hundred and nine-teen students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, out of 7,041 graduating students, passed with First Class in the 2009/2010 academic session, with Faculty of Engineering topping the list.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, revealed this during the pre-convocation news conference, Wednesday, on the activities lined up for the convocation ceremony. According to him, the 2009/2010 convocation ceremony will take place on January 19 and 20, at the Multipurpose Hall Complex, Main Campus of the university.
He said the convocation lecture entitled, Unilag and University Missions: Past, Future and the Globe, comes up today and will be delivered by a former Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Nurudeen Alao. Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku will chair the lecture.
The VC said 3,825 will receive first degrees, while 3,216 will receive postgraduate degrees.
To prioritise PGD programme
Meanwhile, Prof. Sofoluwe has expressed the university’s determination to prioritise and concentrate more on postgraduate trainings while leaving first degree programmes to other universities as done in some universities abroad.
He said the institution will not stop admitting undergraduates but it will be done through Open Distance Learning programme of the university.
Meanwhile, the university will be conferring Honourary Doctorate Degree (Honris Causa) on a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of Nigeria, Prince Bola Ajibola, SAN, for his immerse contribution to the country’s development.
