BENIN—FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, paid condolence visits to Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the family of the late elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro, saying that a golden era in the history of the country “is coming to a total end.”
This came as Governor Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday, supported the call by some Nigerians that the Federal Government should give a state burial to the late Chief Enahoro, because of the sacrifices he made for the independent of the country.
Chief Obasanjo who met with Oshiomhole at Government House, Benin City, said he was shocked when he heard about the death of Mrs Clara Oshiomhole and urged the Governor to take heart.
He said that he had been constantly in touch with the Governor since the incident, adding “I am here now to once again personally pay my condolence on behalf of my family for the demise of your wife.
I want to also use this opportunity to pay condolence to the home of our most distinguished elder statesman, late Chief Enahoro, and of course you as the Governor of the state, who is the Chief mourner. The history of Nigeria will not be complete without the name of Chief Enahoro. So it is a great loss to Nigeria.”
In his response, Governor Oshiomhole thanked the former President for identifying with the family in this trying period, recalling that “you called me when this thing happened to pay your condolence. On behalf of my children, I thank you.
I also want to thank you on behalf of the good people of Edo State on your second condolence visit in respect of our late elder statesman, Chief Enahoro. I believe he played his part but it is now left for us to sustain the struggle where he stopped.
“Some people have called for a state burial for him and I think he merits it. I will like to request your Excellency to help add your voice to Abuja, because I do not think that Chief Enahoro should be buried like just another Nigerian because of what he did for the nation,” Oshiomhole added.
After the visit, Chief Obasanjo proceeded to the GRA residence of Chief Enahoro where he met the elder son of the deceased, Ken and Mrs wife.
