The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has described the recent actions of the National Assembly regarding the Electoral  Act 2010 Bill as self-serving, selfish and most unpatriotic.

National President of NANS, Comrade Ini Ememobong, who disclosed this in a statement, said the National Assembly seemed to be taking Nigerians for a ride, especially as it had just emerged from a messy war of words with the CBN governor, with the latter having the upper hand on issues of jumbo pay, to inclusion of National Assembly members in NEC of parties.

According to him, the National Assembly has derailed and has left the onerous duty of legislating for the smooth administration of the country to the debased and pedestrian vice of abuse of office and priviledge.

He said: “It is clear that they are legislating for themselves and not for the masses of this country.

“This circumstance is most pitiable and undesirable. Nigerian students will rise not just in condemnation of this greedy act, but we will massively mobilise to curb such unbridled greed and we call on Mr. President not to assent to this obnoxious bill, so as not to be seen as a part of this anti-people conspiracy.”

“All Nigerians must ensure that these legislators are stopped using legitimate means, especially now that the elections are drawing nearer.  Nigerians must not be taken for a ride again.

“Legislators ideally, are agents of the people in their constituency and not dictators for their constituency, they should listen to the pulse of their people and take same to the floor of their respective houses, but reverse is the case.   This time, we must not allow that to happen again.”
