MRS Ebi Obaro, president of Maple Education College, who double as the president of the newly Maple Canadian College. MCC, the institution is set to run exclusive Canadian curriculum.

Obaro a certified Canadian Immigration Consultant in an exclusive interview with Vanguard explained  aside running an exclusively Canadian curriculum for its ten months Diploma programme, her students get exempted from taking A’LEVELS examination to gain admission into any Canadian universities or other universities of the world.

According to her, the college set to commence academic activities in Nigeria come September this year basically aimed to allow students obtain the Ontario secondary school diploma that would facilitate admission into any Canadian universities or other universities in the world.

According to the Canadian citizen who is also a Canadian Immigration Consultant,” MCC is the college that promotes Canadian education and Canadian curriculum. We teach only Canadian curriculum up to college while other colleges teach British curriculum and /or Nigerian curriculum. The beauty of this curriculum is that when our students get there, Ontario Secondary School, Diploma or Canadian High School Secondary School, Diploma, they are able to study anywhere in the world. For instance, in the United Kingdom, UK, if you have their O’LEVELS, you need their A’LEVELS to go into their universities. But with our diploma, you can go to British university without the A’LEVELS because the Ontario secondary diploma is equivalent to the British A’LEVELS. You can take our students to Canadian universities, American universities and others in the world. That is our caption is,’ start here, go anywhere in the world.’

“Another beauty of studying in MCC is that we would like a situation where all our students get their visa after leaving our school.   I am a certified Canadian Immigration Consultant which means that I am authorized to represent foreign nationals to get any kind of visa into Canada. So our students will be well represented in Canadian. “

The MCC president reiterated that the college offering of Canadian curriculum was to bridge the gap in curricular of both countries. “The reason why we offer only Canadian curriculum is that most of our students already have their West Africa Examination Council, WAEC certificate which contain Nigerian curriculum. And being students who want to go abroad, we do not need to integrate the Nigerian curriculum again into our school. All MCC is trying to do is to cover the gap between WAEC curriculum and the Canadian High School curriculum/ syllabus. That way, they will do well when they go to the universities in Canada. “ she said.

According to her, MCC was established to eliminate the struggles students especially young ones faced in securing admission abroad. “The need to eliminate the struggles of foreigners going to Canada to study especially the young ones, although Canadian universities will accept WAEC certificate as an entry requirement , however, because the curriculum is not the same especially in areas such as Sciences, in English and Writing. We found out that our students struggle a lot. A four year university programme becomes five or six years programme because they are struggling and they fail. They also change course. This then result in most cases a change of programme for some students if they fail; some drop out. These all informed us to bring the 12 Grade programme to Nigeria. It is more affordable, and the students are at home, they can go through programmes to prepare them for the university. This will make them actualize their dreams and eliminate failing of courses which most times result in change of programme. Here you will be sure the students will do well after the programme in Canadian.

“In addition, “ Aside sitting for the entrance examination, for those students who do not pass the examination, they can start with us with some Grade Eleven courses. There is provision for that. “she explained.

On what an all round education entail, the academician said “All round education is a holistic one. It is not only about the academics, it is the ability to survive in this world. To be a team player, to be able to relate with other people and also have soft skills. Soft skills are so importance. The ability to survive in this world is really more important than our certificate. So, all round education is both academic and having soft skills.   It is useful when people have other skills added to it.

“And the niche of Canadian education is that it is world class that has very high standard. Our students who go to Canadian say, “Now I now feel I am in school.’ This is because the Canadian education is very practical, has lots, discussions, writing skills and assignments. And at the end of the day, you understand what you are taught. It involves basically acquiring skills and knowledge and team work.

“Students play major role in their education, it is not just a teacher coming to teach. They are involved, one hour in class covering a topic, means going home and reading that topic for three hours. Therefore, gathering more knowledge. This is because teacher cannot cover the whole topic in one hour. That is why assignments and test in class. And a lot of marks come from what they do in class not really on the examination.

When asked if the education is accessible to every Nigeria, the Immigration Consultant noted that though foreign education was never cheap, Canadian education was relatively affordable compared other colleges.

“Well, education is a product and not everybody can afford foreign education. I went to university in England with a scholarship from Rivers state government and my parents could not afford it but I went there on a scholarship. I know government do give scholarships to study abroad, and some parents do send their children abroad to study too. So it is not cheap by any means. But Canadian education is way more affordable than other countries that have good quality education.

“Maple Canadian College offers the grade twelve or pre-university programme. That is the programme that prepares students for university; we are looking at students who are presently in Senior Secondary three, SS3 finishing this year; students who already have WAEC or NECO certificates and very good students who are in SS2. We are looking at students age15 to 18 years old to prepare them for universities in Canada and other parts of the world.

“Yes, MCC is a Canadian company with branches in Nigeria. We have over 55 institutions we are affiliated from High schools, to colleges to the universities. So when our students finish, even before their completion of the first semester, we apply for universities in Canada or any countries of their choice. “

“And hopefully, by September 2nd  2019 we will start academic work in our Campus is at   Lekki Phase which has boarding facilities. Meanwhile, we will be having an open house in July where prospective parents and their students will get our tour of our facilities. “ Mrs Obaro noted.
