Ahead of the yuletide, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has called on transport companies nationwide to conform with the Corps’ stipulated safety standard by ensuring the use of passengers manifest, for easy identification and location of relations of accidents victims.
The Unit’s Commander, Mr. Isaac Abioye, made the call during the flag-off of 2010 ‘ember months road safety campaign’, held yesterday at the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RETEAN, International Park, Mile 2, Lagos.
Abioye, who observed that periods like this was usually characterised by sharp changes in the attitudes of transport operators and commuters alike, disclosed that the Corps had established more units commands across the nation, with a view to covering the vast road networks and also to reach out to the nooks and crannies of the nation.
More clinics and help areas, he added, were being established to cater for immediate rehabilitation of accident victims.
Expectations, he hinted, were high on the festivities ahead, as they result to increase in economic activities as well as movement of persons and vehicles, explaining that “the challenges presented by the scenario informed the Corps decision to adopt the public education and enlightenment therapy in conjunction with other stakeholders in transport sector and general public in addressing the issue.
This is aimed at fashioning a better and well informed road safety culture to meet up with the new challenges of our time on the high ways”.
He, therefore, advised motorists to avoid the use of mobile phones while driving as well as rest properly before hitting the roads, adding also that they made use of the seat belts.
Discouraging drivers to avoid over speeding, he said motorcyclists were not left out in the campaign, advising them to always use crash helmet as well as insist that their passengers complied.
