Governor’s Cup: Lawal, Babalola win

Some Nigerian players  appear to have woken up from their deep slumber with good performances  in yesterday’s first round matches at the10th Governor’s Cup Futures II holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Unranked Shehu Lawal started their ball rolling when he defeated Morocco’s Anas Fattarn who is ranked number 834 in the world in a game that ended 6-4,4-6, 6-2.

In other matches, unranked Abdulmumin Babalola beat compatriot Destiny Ford Da Silva, who is ranked number 1520, in straight set of 6-0,6-1 just as Candy Idoko defeated Taiwo Owolabi in 6-1,1-0 retired.

The duo of Fatimah Abinu and Sabath Ibrahim got the best out of Sarah Ellen Hofmann of Great Britain and Volha Kalodzitsa of Belarus in a tight match that ended in 1-6,7-6(13), 13/11 in the women’s doubles.

Adeyinka Elisabeth Thompson of Nigeria paired with Nimom Segodo of Benin to beat the duo of Natalie Piquion. France and Margarita-Greta Skripnik of Isreal in straight set of 6-0,6-0.

In other results, Ronke Akingbade lost to Dalila Jakupovic in 1-6, 0-6, Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan of India defeated Bolaji Olawepo 6-0,6-2. Tal Eros of Isreal beat Andrew Fitzpatrick of Germany 6-2,6-4.
