DAMATURU — Yobe State Commissioner of Education, Alh. Mohammed Al’Amin, has disclosed that over 100 indigenes of the state are currently pursuing postgraduate studies overseas through a special scholarship programme of the state government.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard in his office in Damaturu, Al’Amin said the students were being trained by the government through a specialised arrangement with the tertiary institutions abroad, noting that special fields like Medicine, Environment, Agriculture and other specialized courses were being pursued by the students.

He, however, said the government scholarship programme overseas did not cover undergraduate students even as he said government has made adequate arrangement for those pursuing academic studies within the nation’s higher institutions. Commenting on infrastructure in schools, he said “government has carried out comprehensive renovation in most of the schools while others would be done before the completion of the tenure of the present government.”

Meanwhile, Yobe State government has approved the payment of N659 million to offset the school fees of the Nigerian Turkish International College, NTIC, secondary schools and universities for the 2010/2011 academic year.
