HRD Solutions pushes workforce readiness over recruitment

HRD Solutions pushes workforce readiness over recruitment

HRD Solutions Ltd, a workforce development and recruitment advisory firm, is advocating a shift from conventional hiring practices to a workforce model that integrates recruitment, training, performance management and employee retention.

The company said the approach was necessary to address the gap between academic qualifications and workplace readiness confronting employers in Nigeria and other African countries.

In an interview, the Chief Executive Officer of HRD Solutions, Mr Osayande Omo-Osagie, said many organisations struggled not because talent was unavailable, but because candidates often lacked the practical skills, industry exposure and professional discipline required to perform effectively.

He said the gap frequently resulted in recruitment mismatches, reduced productivity and high employee turnover.

“ At HRD Solutions, we don’t just recruit talent — we build employability pipelines and workforce systems that ensure businesses get performance, not just headcount,” Omo-Osagie said.

According to him, employers need to look beyond the apparent shortage of skilled workers and examine how candidates are prepared for the demands of specific industries and workplaces.

He said candidates might possess relevant qualifications but still require practical training, workplace experience and structured onboarding to meet employers’ expectations.

“The real challenge in Africa is not talent scarcity — it is talent readiness. Employers who invest in structured onboarding and training outperform those who rely solely on traditional hiring,” he said.

Omo-Osagie urged companies operating in emerging markets to adopt a workforce development approach that combines recruitment with continuous training and skills development.

He said such a model should prioritise candidates’ potential and adaptability, develop local talent pipelines and ensure that job roles reflect the realities of local markets and infrastructure.

“Recruitment in emerging markets is no longer about filling roles — it is about building systems that sustain performance at scale,” he said.

The HRD Solutions chief executive identified skills-based hiring, the expansion of digital and remote work, employee retention and stronger workforce compliance as key trends shaping recruitment across Africa.

He said employers were increasingly placing greater emphasis on practical competencies rather than formal qualifications alone, particularly in technology, sales and operations.

He also noted that remote work had created opportunities for African professionals to participate in the global labour market, while exposing local employers to greater competition for talent.

On employee retention, Omo-Osagie said organisations needed to pay closer attention to employee engagement, welfare, performance monitoring and their employee value proposition to build stable and productive teams.

He added that regulatory compliance, payroll administration and workforce governance were becoming increasingly important as businesses expanded.

“The future of recruitment in Africa will be defined by organisations that can combine talent sourcing with workforce structure, compliance, and performance management,” he said.

Omo-Osagie said one major change he would like to see in the recruitment sector was a shift from short-term hiring to long-term investment in employees.

He argued that organisations that concentrated only on filling immediate vacancies without investing in training, performance management and career progression risked recurring recruitment costs, low productivity and high staff turnover.

“The biggest transformation Africa needs is moving from ‘hiring employees’ to ‘building workforces.’ That shift alone can unlock massive productivity gains across industries,” he said.

He said HRD Solutions was pursuing an approach that integrates recruitment, training, performance management and retention to help organisations develop more effective and sustainable workforces.

“Africa’s workforce is one of the most dynamic in the world, but unlocking its full potential requires a new recruitment model, one that integrates hiring, training, performance, and retention into a single system. At HRD Solutions, we are building that future,” he added.
