Accessories can influence how people are perceived in professional and social settings, complementing clothing and helping individuals express their personal style, according to Mubarak Bello, founder of Baawa Accessories.

Bello said accessories such as wristwatches, sunglasses and jewellery were often overlooked, despite their role in completing an outfit and shaping an individual’s overall appearance.

He founded Baawa Accessories in 2022 after developing an interest in fashion through the guidance of a mentor and exposure to another business venture in Lagos, Nigeria. The experience introduced him to the sale of sunglasses, wristwatches and other personal accessories.

The business has since established a physical showroom in Abeokuta, Ogun State, alongside an online store operating under the name BAAWA NG.

Bello attributed the limited attention given to accessories by some Nigerians to the perception that they were luxury items rather than essential complements to personal style. He also cited affordability concerns and religious beliefs that influence some people’s decisions about wearing jewellery and other accessories.

He, however, maintained that accessories were available at different price points and that customers did not need to spend beyond their means to improve their appearance.

According to him, the choice of accessories should reflect individual preferences, financial circumstances and personal beliefs rather than pressure to follow expensive fashion trends.

Bello said accessories could complement different styles of clothing, adding that each item served a distinct purpose in enhancing an individual’s appearance.

To address concerns about affordability, he said the business was considering introducing more affordable branded accessories in the future, although he did not provide a timeline for the planned expansion.

He also highlighted the role of online platforms in helping customers outside Abeokuta access the products without visiting the physical showroom.

Addressing concerns about online shopping, Bello said customers could inspect products in person or request clear virtual displays of the items they intended to purchase before making payment or arranging delivery.

He added that the business used its social media platforms and digital channels to communicate with customers and provide information about available products.

For customers who are unsure about the accessories that would suit their appearance or clothing, Bello said they could seek guidance from the business before making a purchase.

He said the company’s focus was on understanding customer preferences, selecting products carefully and building trust through the quality of items supplied.

Bello added that the business hoped to develop its range of wristwatches, sunglasses and jewellery in line with customer demand, while maintaining attention to design, quality and affordability.
