The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (NCA) has called on Nigerians to remain calm, peaceful and united despite the country’s growing economic and security challenges, warning against actions that could worsen the nation’s situation.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the association acknowledged widespread concerns over the rising cost of living, insecurity, unemployment, poverty and other socio-economic difficulties affecting millions of Nigerians.
The NCA said while citizens’ grievances are genuine and deserve urgent attention, responses to the nation’s challenges must remain within the bounds of peace, the rule of law and responsible citizenship.
According to the association, Nigerians have a constitutional right to express their concerns and demand accountability from leaders, stressing that constructive engagement remains a vital component of democracy and good governance.
However, it cautioned citizens against allowing their frustrations to be exploited by individuals or groups whose interests may not align with the country’s collective wellbeing.
The association noted that many families and communities are struggling under severe economic pressures and described the concerns being raised by citizens as legitimate and deserving of serious consideration.
It urged governments at all levels to implement policies that will ease hardship, create economic opportunities and improve living standards, adding that sustainable peace and stability can only flourish when citizens feel included, protected and hopeful about the future.
“Concerns raised by citizens are real, legitimate and deserving of serious attention,” the statement said, while urging stakeholders to approach national issues with maturity, responsibility and a commitment to lasting solutions.
While reaffirming citizens’ right to peaceful expression, the NCA appealed particularly to young Nigerians to shun violence, destruction of public property and actions capable of disrupting public order.
It warned that violence and social unrest would only compound the challenges already facing communities across the country and urged citizens to channel their frustrations through peaceful and constructive means that promote dialogue, understanding and practical solutions.
The association stressed that national progress can only be achieved through cooperation, mutual respect and collective responsibility.
The NCA also called on the Federal Government and political leaders to deepen engagement with citizens and demonstrate greater responsiveness to public concerns.
It advocated sincere and transparent communication between government and the people, noting that public trust can only be strengthened when citizens feel heard and witness tangible efforts to address their challenges.
The association urged authorities to prioritise measures aimed at reducing economic hardship, improving security, creating jobs and restoring confidence in governance.
According to the group, effective leadership at this critical period requires compassion, accountability and policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The NCA further appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at sustaining peace and strengthening national unity.
It said all segments of society have important roles to play in preventing tension, promoting understanding and ensuring that Nigeria remains united despite its current challenges.
The association emphasised that national stability rests on the principles of justice, inclusion and respect for human dignity.
“When citizens feel heard, protected and given opportunities to thrive, national stability becomes stronger and the foundation for development becomes more secure,” it stated.
The NCA said its position was guided by Christian values of compassion, justice, truth and service to humanity, urging both leaders and citizens to embrace those principles in their conduct.
It noted that Nigeria is passing through a difficult period that requires sober reflection, responsible leadership and a shared commitment to national unity.
The association reaffirmed its support for initiatives that promote peace, protect human dignity, advance justice and strengthen harmony among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
It also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, law-abiding and committed to the peaceful pursuit of a more prosperous and stable nation while praying for wisdom for leaders, peace in communities and continued progress for the country.
