plans grassroots vote mobilisation
A coalition of labour leaders, professionals, artisans, and working Nigerians under the banner of Working People United, WoPU, has declared support for the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu, pledging nationwide grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group made its position known during a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, where it presented its organisational structure, vision, and strategy for mobilising working-class support for the President’s second term ambition.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, WoPU National Coordinator General, Prince Williams Akporeha, said the coalition was formed to provide a broader platform for working Nigerians to participate actively in shaping national political direction beyond traditional labour structures.

He explained that the group draws membership from various sectors of the economy, including strong representation from the oil and gas industry and other key segments of the workforce.

Akporeha said WoPU’s endorsement of President Tinubu is based on confidence in the administration’s long-term economic reform agenda, which he said is aimed at stabilising the economy and driving sustainable development.

While acknowledging current economic challenges, he maintained that the reforms are necessary to address structural weaknesses and reposition the country for future growth.

He also disclosed that WoPU has developed a nationwide mobilisation plan focused on grassroots engagement, voter education, and increased participation of working-class communities in the democratic process.

In his response, Senator Lokpobiri commended the group’s initiative, describing it as a positive contribution to national development and democratic participation. He assured the delegation of the government’s openness to collaboration and constructive engagement.

The meeting also highlighted plans by WoPU to leverage its diaspora network to support awareness campaigns abroad and enhance international understanding of Nigeria’s reform efforts.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the movement’s objectives, adopting the slogan: “Working People United — Time for a Greater Nigeria,” as they pledged sustained mobilisation across the country.
