…Democratic Space at ADC Congress in Sokoto
By Musa Ubandawaki, Sokoto
SOKOTO — Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has expressed concerns over governance challenges and the state of Nigeria’s democratic space, calling for renewed commitment to multiparty democracy.
Tambuwal spoke on Saturday shortly after the state congress of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto, where party leaders and supporters gathered to strengthen structures ahead of future political contests.
Addressing party members, he emphasised the need to preserve Nigeria’s multiparty system and ensure that all political parties operate in a fair and competitive environment.
“There is a need for all stakeholders to work towards sustaining a vibrant multiparty democracy where different voices can contribute to national development,” he said.
Tambuwal described the ADC as an emerging political platform, noting that the party was gradually expanding its presence across the country, with Sokoto playing a significant role in its growth.
“Sokoto remains a strong base for the ADC. From here, we will continue to mobilise, strengthen our structures and promote unity for greater national relevance,” he stated.
He commended party stakeholders for conducting what he described as peaceful and orderly congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, adding that the process reflected internal organisation and commitment among members.
“We have conducted successful congresses at various levels. I commend our leaders and members for their dedication throughout the process,” Tambuwal said.
On national issues, the former governor highlighted concerns around insecurity, economic pressures, and unemployment, urging collective efforts to address the country’s challenges.
He also called on political actors and citizens to uphold democratic values and participate responsibly in the electoral process.
Tambuwal stressed the importance of issue-based campaigns and voter awareness as preparations begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism about the future of democratic engagement in Nigeria, encouraging political stakeholders to remain committed to peaceful participation and national development.
The ADC congress in Sokoto concluded with renewed calls for unity among members and sustained grassroots mobilisation as the party positions itself for future elections.
