Mike Makinde wins 15th edition of DOAM Foundation Golf Tournament

Mike Makinde, an 8-handicapper, has emerged the overall winner of the 15th edition of the Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial (DOAM) Foundation Golf Tournament after an exciting and gruelling golfing experience on Saturday, April 18, at the Ikoyi Club 1938 Golf Course in Lagos.
Makinde claimed the trophy with a 65 nett score leaving Paul Tijani, 12-handicapper, and Segun Adekoya, 11-handicapper, as the first and second runner-up respectively. It is interesting to note that, both the first and second runners -up were the second runner-up and overall winner of the 14th edition of the tournament held in 2025.
Makindes victory was applauded by all, as he carted away not only the much-coveted winner’s trophy but also, a Zinox Elite Pro 2, Ultra 7 Intel Core Laptop, proudly sponsored by Zinox Technologies and a M1 Basic BP Monitor.
An elated Makinde said after his victory, “Winning, in anything, is a result of hard work and dedication and I feel so happy to have won at this time. It confirms that my hard work, the hard work of all players and that of the organizers of this event pays off. I appreciate the organizers for their consistency in maintaining the lofty standards that we have come to know and enjoy about the tournament.
“I also appreciate DOAM Foundation for the good work they are doing in the society for the less privileged. Understanding the impact of DOAM Foundation to the society makes this victory even more meaningful.”
He commended the DOAMF Team and the Ikoyi Club Golf Section for the quality of organization and impact they are making in touching lives with donations from the annual tournament event.
In the Ladies category, Pauline Onafowokan emerged the overall winner with a 70 nett score to beat Toluwaleshe Balogun, the runner-up, and Oluyemi Afariogun as the second runner-up.
Onafowokan, in addition to the Ladies Winner’s trophy, was rewarded with a 2-night weekend stay at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, a 7.5 litres Kenwood Air Fryer, a Digital Weighing Scale and a Lemon Squeezer.
Among the many interesting things to note at the 15th edition of this Tournament is the fact that the Ladies first runner-up and the Nearest-to-the-Pin winner, Toluwaleshe Balogun, playing off handicap 24, is a young golfer of only 11 years old.
Other winners at the event included Arun Sharma, who shot 77 to pick the best gross prize, beating Joachim Afe and Jonathan Akpoborie, who finished in second and third places, respectively.
Sharma carted away not only the best gross trophy but also a romantic weekend getaway at Landmark Hotel, sponsored by Vacation Places and M1 Basic BP Monitor.
While in the Ladies Gross category, Lynda Obieze emerged the winner with Uche Ubakanma and Dammy Oruwari in second and third places.
Obieze was rewarded with a Royal Blender, Royal Juicer, Royal Electric Kettle, and Glucometer.
In the Veterans Category, A.M. Badmus emerged the winner, with a 75 nett score, beating Yomi Sanni and Frank Gboneme to second and third places respectively. Badmus was also rewarded with a 2-night weekend stay at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel and a Digital Weighing Scale.
The event featured a field of 168 players, in a strong show of support for the tournament, in addition to the support offered by corporate and individual sponsors and partners.
The tournament ended with a cocktail party and prize-giving event in the evening, at which sponsors and golfers interacted, while the Foundation showcased its programmes and achievements to date and appreciated all individuals and corporate organizations who have been consistent supporters over the 15 years of the tournament.
